Questions to ask before your pet surgery

Questions To Ask Before Your Pet’s Surgery

At Advanced Mobile Vet, we have the opportunity to travel around Seminole, Orange, and Volusia counties in Florida. Visiting farms and homes, we treat all types of animals from pocket pets to livestock, so we see a wide range of conditions. Sometimes, an animal may be in need of surgery to remedy something that's going on with them. We understand that this can be stressful for owners. But asking questions can help reduce the fear and anxiety you are feeling. Often, it can be hard to think of questions on the spot, so we've compiled this list of questions to ask your vet before your pet's surgery.

1. What are the risks?

Depending on the age and condition of your pet, you'll need to first decide if surgery is the right course of action. Discuss with your vet the chances of recovery if the surgery is performed.

2. How often have you performed this surgery?

Don't be afraid to ask your vet how many times they've done the surgery. You are your pet's advocate and should be confident in the vet's ability to perform the surgery.

3. What type of anesthesia is used?

Clarify if local or general anesthesia will be used. General anesthesia carries some risk and a longer recovery time.

4. How should I prepare my pet?

It's vital to know how to prepare your pet for its surgery. You'll need to know if food and water need to be withheld, if they should be bathed, and any other preparations that need to be made.

5. What does the recovery look like?

Discuss with your vet how long it will take for your pet to recover. Will they need stitches, a cone, physical therapy, etc.? Ask about exercise, food, and grooming. You don't want to do anything that may inhibit their recovery.
